Penang to be the First One-Stop

Tuna Centre

Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), a Member of MMC Group launched the tuna fish landing by Kha Yang 333 vessel at Penang Port's Butterworth Wharves.


The event was officiated by YB Dato' Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries, who mentioned that there are two designated tuna ports in Malaysia named Dermaga Air Dalam in Penang Port and Pelabuhan Tanjung Lembung in Langkawi.


"We want the tuna fish industry to be a new comprehensive industry, helping to generate the economy and benefit the people of Penang," he said after the launch. He also said the government intends to create opportunities for catching tuna fish with local fishermen, besides producing tuna-related food products.


Moreover, the ministry is aiming to land a total of 3,000 tonnes of tuna worth RM 60 million at Penang Port this year adding that 1,100 tonnes have landed to date. He said the target is not impossible as the Penang Port is bigger and equipped with various facilities compared to Langkawi.


Also present at the launch were Datuk Munir Mohd Nawi, Director-General of Fisheries Malaysia, Mr. N Hashim Ab Rahman, Deputy Director-General of Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia, Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Chairman of Penang Port Commission, Dato' Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, Chairman of PPSB, Mr. Ian James, Group Chief Executive Officer of MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd and Mr. Sasedharan Vasudevan, Chief Operating Officer of PPSB.
