Penang Port Welcomes Genting Dream – Maiden Call

Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), a Member of MMC Group organised a welcoming ceremony for the ASIA’S newest luxury cruise ship ‘Genting Dream’ which made its maiden call to Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, Penang. Genting Dream is the first luxury cruise of Dream Cruises for the affluent Asian market.


More than 300 guests comprising government dignitaries, business and trade partners as well as media personnel were taken on a tour of the 18-deck and 151,300-tonne luxurious floating integrated resort. Also present during the event were Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan, Second Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Chairman of Penang Port Commission, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, Chairman of PPSB, Sasedharan Vasudevan, Officer in Charge of PPSB and Thatcher Brown, President of Dream Cruises.


In his speech, Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan said Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal is able to handle an average of 1.2 million passengers annually and 8,000 passengers at any one time. To date, top cruise operators such as Star Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Princess Cruises, Cunard, AIDA Cruises are among the regulars calling on Penang Port.


He said next year, Penang Port is planning to build two new escalators costing RM1.83 million and expand the terminal with a longer berth, bigger terminal concourse and equipped with gangway bridges. Once completed, Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal will be able to berth Oasis-class ships together and able to attract more home-porting international cruise ships.
