YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia today officially launched the tunneling works for MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Line at Bandar Malaysia North MRT.

During the launch ceremony, the Prime Minister was given the honour of starting the massive tunnel boring machine, which will bore some 13.5km for the underground section of the proposed 52.2km-long SSP Line.

The SSP Line is the second under the Klang Valley MRT project and will run from Sungai Buloh to Putrajaya through Kepong, Batu, Jalan Ipoh, Titiwangsa, KLCC, Tun Razak Exchange, Bandar Malaysia, Sungai Besi, Serdang, UPM and Cyberjaya.

The SSP Line requires 12 tunnel boring machines, compared with eight for the Sungai Buloh Kajang Line, as it has more underground stations (11 compared with seven) and a longer underground alignment (13.5km compared with 9.5km).

The SSP Line project is being developed by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) while MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd is responsible for the underground works. The tunnel boring machine, manufactured in Germany, first created history when it was used for tunneling works for the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line.

The launch event was attended by Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, Chief Secretary to the Government, YB Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Transport and Dato' Sri Shahril Mokhtar Chief Executive Officer of MRT Corp.  Also present at the event were Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, Group Managing Director of MMC Corporation Berhad together with several members of the management team.

Upon completion, the MRT SSP line will have a total of 36 stations spanning 52.2km, with an estimated daily ridership of 529,000 when it reaches maturity.
