The official launching ceremony of the Malaysia World Maritime Week 2018 was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato’ Kamarudin Jaffar, Deputy Minister of Transport Malaysia (MOT). Also present during the ceremony were Dato’ Chua Kok Ching, MOT Deputy Secretary General, Dato’ Haji Baharin Dato’ Abd Hamid, Director General of Marine Department and Dato’ IR Abdul Hak Mohd Amin, Chairman of Malaysia Shipowners’ Association (MASA).

During the opening ceremony, maritime pilots from Northport and PPSB were honourably awarded with the Maritime Pilot Stalwart Award 2018. The maritime pilots, Capt. Cheng Sung Fong of Northport and Capt. Roslan Othman of PPSB, who are also members of the Maritime Pilots Malaysia (MPM), were among the three recipients of the inaugural award to honour Malaysia’s maritime pilots at this year’s Malaysia World Maritime Week award presentation.

According to the President and Chairman of MPM, Capt. Martin Lim, the inaugural presentation of the award to maritime pilots this year is indeed timely as the heritage of maritime pilots in Malaysia’s shipping and maritime industry set-off together then.

“Maritime pilots have been an essential and crucial integral part of the port and harbour in the shipping and maritime industry, who contributes directly to the safety and security in the ports and harbour, public safety and protection of the environment. We will continue to exercise our professional roles and obligation for a better shipping and better future”.

The winners of the Maritime Pilot Stalwart Award were shortlisted from an array of maritime pilots nationwide based on their outstanding professionalism, commitment in safety, protection of life and property and continuous contribution to the sustainability of port development, including the shipping industry.

The Malaysia World Maritime Week 2018 is a joint effort between the Malaysian Government and the maritime industry. It is organized by the Ministry of Transport and the Marine Department, Malaysia and hosted by MASA. The World Maritime Week is celebrated globally with a vibrant theme "IMO 70: Our Heritage - Better Shipping for a Better Future". This year’s event is held in conjunction with the 70 years establishment of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
