Northport Continues Reaching Out to

Orang Asli Mah Meri Community of Carey Island

Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (Northport), a member of MMC Group reached out to the Carey Island community by participating in the community’s programme and distributing zakat assistance to the island’s asnaf group.

The programme, which was held on the weekend, started with a sports day event at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Judah (A).  Northport’s Head of Facilities, Equipment and Maintenance Division, Ir. Zai bin Abas officiated the annual event which drew participation from the school’s children and their parents. Also present were Tok Batin Daiman Peron, Head of Kampung Sungai Judah and Bidin Loya, President of Parent Teacher Association.

Northport representatives were then headed to Masjid Darul Tahsis, Carey Island for the Company’s zakat redistribution program. About 100 local residents, mostly from the Orang Asli Mah Meri ethnic community who fall under the “poor asnaf” category, were provided with essential food items and financial assistance. The zakat redistribution program received full support from the mosque’s management, led by its “nazir”, Ustaz Muhammad Rosli Mustafa.

Carey Island is synonymous with the early settlement of the Orang Asli Mah Meri ethnic community. Mah Meri is one of the 18 indigenous peoples in Malaysia. The Mah Meri ethnic community in Carey Island is known for its wooden puppets and masks handcrafts.

Northport has had various CSR programs with Carey Island community in the past and will continue to reach out and give back to the community, to fulfil its commitment as a responsible corporate organisation.
