As the saying goes, ‘Many hands make light work’, and this was reflected accurately by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (Penang Port) volunteers on Earth Day. In celebrating the international environmental appreciation day, Penang Port, along with the Penang State Forestry Department jointly organised the Mangrove Planting Programme in Juru, Seberang Perai, Penang on 23 April 2019.

More than 100 volunteers clad in blue shirts walked into the swamp area and got their hands dirty by planting 1,000 trees sponsored by Penang State Forestry Department.

“This one hectare of mangrove swamp previously was illegally cleared by fishermen to start an illegal shrimp and fish farm. On behalf of the Penang people, I would like to thank the Penang Port team for spending their early morning to grow our mangrove forest together”, said YB Gooi Hsiao-Leung, ADUN Bukit Tengah.

Together with YB Gooi were Dato’ Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, Chairman of Penang Port; Muhammad Ezhar Yusuf, Director of Penang State Forestry Department; and Jeffrey Chew Gim Eam, Chairman of Penang Port Commission. The guests of honours kicked off the Mangrove Planting Programme by planting the first few trees.

The Mangrove Planting Programme was part of MMC Group’s environmental Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to help sustain the local ecosystems where we operate. The Group’s CSR on environment is also aligned with the Penang State Government’s aim at promoting a cleaner and greener state.
