Senai International Airport Reaches 4 Million Passengers Milestone In 2019

On 20 December 2019, Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (Senai International Airport), a member of MMC Group celebrated its latest milestone, handling 4 million passengers in a single year for the first time since its opening in 1974.


The 4 millionth passenger, Madam Lim Seoh Boey who was travelling with her three children, arrived at Senai International Airport at 10:50 am via AirAsia flight AK 6051 from Kuala Lumpur was welcomed with a special celebration led by YB Muhammad Bakhtiar bin Wan Chik, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, accompanied by YB Liow Cai Tung, Chairman of Johor State Tourism, Women & Family Development Committee and Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Senai International Airport.  


Senai International Airport is currently operating at its maximum capacity of 4 million passengers per annum. Addressing the terminal capacity issue, Md Derick has announced that Senai International Airport will be expanding its terminal to increase the current capacity.


The RM20 million project shall include the extension of the existing arrival and departure halls towards the south of the existing terminal building with key elements including the construction of four new departure and boarding gates, additional new seating area, covered walkway connecting to aircraft parking bays, installation of additional baggage handling system and installation of escalator and elevator to link the existing terminal building to the new area. Upon completion of the project in Q2 2021, the airport guests will enjoy better space comfort, access and facilities as compared to the current situation.


During the same event, the honourable guests were also brought to officiate the We Care Corner, a new addition in Senai International Airport to facilitate young passengers travelling alone, elderly passengers and physically challenged person. We Care Corner is located nearby the information counter of the airport.

 

Senai International Airport handles an average of over 11,500 passengers and 110 flight movements daily with 80% of its operations and passengers is contributed by AirAsia. Currently, the airport is connected to seven international and 11 domestic destinations operated by five airlines – AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, Malindo Air and Jin Air.
