Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak launched the Sipitang package of Pan Borneo Sabah Highway Project at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sindumin, Sabah.

Also present at the event were YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman, Chief Minister of Sabah, YB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof, Minister of Works, Y. B. Datuk Rosnah Bte Abdul Rashid Shirlin, Deputy Minister of Works, YB Tan Sri Datuk Sri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Development together with other government officials. Representatives from MMC were Ir. Chee Weng Loon and Mohd Abdul Fatah Endut from the Engineering & Construction Division.

During the event, Prime Minister launched the ground-breaking ceremony for the project to upgrade the 28.4 km Sindumin-Kampung Melalia Road, Sipitang for approximately RM600 million.

The project involved upgrading the existing two-lane road to four-lane and would entail building two tiered interchanges and three bridges. It was part of the first phase of the 706 km Pan Borneo Sabah starting from Sindumin to Kudat on the west coast and from Ranau to Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau on the east coast. The project would change the landscape of the Sipitang district which would experience a transformation when the Pan Borneo Highway project was fully completed and to simultaneously become the catalyst in the development of Sabah. The highway would also ease access to the oil and gas economic corridor area between Sipitang and Kimanis.

During the event, Prime Minister gave his assurance that the toll-free Pan Borneo Highway network in Sabah will be a world-class highway, on par with those in developed nations when completed. He said the Public Works Department, which had a high standard, would ensure this.

UEM MMC Joint Venture Sdn Bhd, a 50:50 jointly controlled entity of MMC Corporation Berhad has a 40% stake in Borneo Highway PDP Sdn Bhd (BHP), the appointed Project Delivery Partner for Pan Borneo Sabah.
