Northport Bags APEC Port Services Network  (APSN) Green Port 2020

Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (Northport)’s firm commitment towards sustainability and green initiatives adopted in its ports operations has earned them an international recognition, together with Port Klang Authority (PKA) and Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Westports) were awarded the APEC Port Services Network (APSN) Green Port 2020. This is the second time that Northport, PKA and Westports have received the award since it was launched in 2016.


The official ceremony of the award presentation was held during the hybrid event of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Smart Port Development Forum in Qingdau, China on 16 and 17 November 2021.


The Green Port Award System (GPAS) programme is a green evaluation system for ports in the Asia-Pacific region developed by the APSN with the endorsement of the APEC forum. GPAS is an important APSN programme that promotes sustainable development of ports in the Asia-Pacific region.


For the Green Port 2020 award nomination, Northport presented its Green Master Plan for evaluation by the award committee members. The master plan was designed on six pillars, namely:

i.    Equipment and Maintenance – to introduce and operate electric and hybrid-based equipment.

ii.   Energy – to become biomass enabler/facilitator terminal to support green energy supply chain.

iii.  Waste – to reduce waste disposal to landfill by establishing Port Reception Facilities or PRF to  

      accommodate vessel waste - the first on-site PRF in Malaysia and implementing 3R programmes.

iv.  Nature conservation – to promote environment conservation through mangrove protection   

      programme and green landscaping initiatives.

v.   Operation – to implement fuel reduction initiatives and paperless approach to reduce environmental

      impact from Northport’s operation activities.

vi.  Building and infrastructure – to apply Green Building Index certification and introduction of LED

      lighting system and green technology for new development project including solar panel on   

      warehouses.


The award recipients were selected by an evaluation committee based on various indicators set out in the implementation plan and other specific criteria for GPAS expert evaluation. The GPAS evaluation team consists of 26 experts from 15 countries with combined talents of toughness, intellect, experience and good reputation, who are mostly working for governments, port and shipping companies, non-governmental organisations, universities and research institutes.
