The approximately RM700 million Sungai Pulai Bridge is a public-private project which involves the construction of bridge crossing Sungai Pulai and link road from Gelang Patah to Tanjung Bin has achieved 34% progress to date. Upon completion in October 2021, the 7.5 kilometres two-lane two-way bridge with a navigational clearance of 25 metres high and 100 metres width will provide direct access from Tanjung Pelepas, Gelang Patah to Tanjung Bin, Pontian.
The new bridge will significantly reduce travel time to 15 minutes from the current land route, which normally takes about an hour. This will improve connectivity of the two districts between Gelang Patah and Pontian which will result in a strong economic multiplier effect to surrounding areas.
In his speech YAB Datuk Haji Hasni Bin Mohammad, Menteri Besar of Johor was pleased with the progress of the bridge. “This is evident of ongoing infrastructure developments to boost Johor economy and a Game Changer in attracting more Foreign Direct Investment and Domestic Direct Investment to the state. Upon completion, the Sungai Pulai Bridge will spur the socio-economic and developments of surrounding areas which will also benefit Tanjung Piai tourism industry,” said YAB Datuk Haji Hasni.
Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, Chairman of Seaport Worldwide Sdn Bhd / Group Managing Director of MMC Corporation Berhad also added, “Despite the COVID-19 situation, the construction of the bridge is progressing well as per scheduled. This would not have been possible without the support from the state government and authorities such as Department of Public Works, District Office, Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Department of Environment, Department of Forestry and Department of Marine.”
