Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (Northport), a member of MMC Group, has been nominated as one of the finalists for the 2022 IAPH Sustainability Awards under the Health Safety and Security category. With a project titled “Journey Towards HSE Excellence”, Northport is competing with Port of Montreal and Port of Amsterdam in the same category.
IAPH or the International Association of Ports and Harbors is a global alliance with members comprising of port authorities, port operators as well as port-related businesses from 87 different nationalities across the world. Its member ports handle approximately one third of the world’s sea-borne trade and well over 60% of the world container traffic.
For this year’s IAPH Sustainability Awards competition, a total of 53 projects were submitted by 36 member ports from 26 countries. All the projects were carefully evaluated and scored for public voting by an esteemed jury of nine independent experts from all over the world with diverse backgrounds including academia, non-governmental organisations, research institutes, media, shipping and former port executive management.
IAPH Technical Director, Dr Antonis Michail commented, “The international jury had their work cut out this year to narrow down the projects to three for each category. Aside from the high quality, the variety in projects across all six categories has resulted in a diverse group of finalists being selected from ports of all sizes and from all geographic regions of the world.”
The six categories of the awards are Climate and Energy, Environmental Care, Community Building, Infrastructure, Digitalisation and Health Safety and Security.
Public voting portal has already been launched on the World Ports Sustainability Programme website and will be open until 18 April 2022. The outcome of the public vote (30%), together with that of the jury evaluation (70%) will determine the winners of the awards which will be announced at the awards ceremony event held in conjunction with the IAPH 2022 World Ports Conference on 17th May 2022 in Vancouver, Canada.
