PTP Inks Contract with ZPMC to Procure 7 Ship to Shore Quay Cranes and 11 Electrified Rubber Tyred Gantries

Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) a member MMC Group, has successfully signed an agreement with Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company (ZPMC) to procure seven new Ship to Shore quay cranes and 11 units of 61-tonnes electrified rubber tyred gantry cranes, underwriting the long-term relationship both parties have in the port and maritime business.

Restricted by the global travel limitations, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the signing ceremony was held virtually with delegates from PTP, led by PTP’s Chief Executive Officer Marco Neelsen, and the Shanghai based crane manufacturing company, led by Liu Chengyun, the Chairman and President of ZPMC.

The new cranes, which form part of the equipment modernisation and replacement strategy, will replace aging assets which have been in service since 2002 and are scheduled to be delivered to PTP in third quarter 2022.

With the purchase, PTP continues to increase its efficiency in handling containers at its feeder berths, preparing for future growth for its hub-and-spoke strategy, which will allow PTP to position itself better for the ASEAN feeder market.

Despite the global pandemic, PTP concluded 2020 with a record setting annual throughput of 9.8 million TEUs, moving it to the 15th place worldwide on busiest container terminals.
