Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a member of MMC Group handed over contributions to assist 100 families of SK LKTP Maokil 2’s students in Labis, Johor who were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beginning July 2021, there was an increase in COVID-19 cases in Felda Maokil with five fatalities and almost 500 people contracted with the COVID-19 virus resulting in Felda Maokil being placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from July 14 to August 10, 2021. The enforcement of EMCO required all residents of Felda Maokil to stay at home and they were prohibited from leaving their houses. Due to this, many residents were financially affected and are in need of assistance to continue to survive.
The volunteers from Johor Port travelled 165 kilometres to help the affected students and their families. The contributions were distributed to 100 families via drive-through at the Community Hall, Dewan Komuniti Cahaya Murni, Felda Maokil. Also present were Mohd Ibrahim Sukarti, Headmaster of SK LKTP Maokil 2. Among the items contributed were food supplies such as rice, vermicelli noodles, biscuits, flour, coconut milk, spices, tea and cocoa powder as well as basic learning tools for the students.
Although the outbreak had subsided after they underwent self quarantine at home, the need for food supplies remained a priority. The village is still tightly controlled by the security personnel.
Johor Port’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative is focused on giving back to the communities and extend beyond the areas where the Johor Port operates.
