Penang Port Sdn Bhd and Penang Port Commission Organise the Launching of Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal Upgrading Project

Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), a member of MMC Group, launched the upgrading project of Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) together with Penang Port Commission (PPC) at the SPCT Waving Gallery, George Town.

The event was officiated by YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang with the attendance of YB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, Minister of Finance, YB Tuan Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport, Jeffrey Chew Gim Eam, Chairman of PPC, Monaliza Suhaimi, General Manager of PPC, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, Chairman of PPSB, Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, Group Managing Director of MMC Corporation Berhad, Sasedharan Vasudevan, Chief Executive Officer of PPSB, governments’ representatives and management of PPSB.

In September 2018, PPSB and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd signed a joint venture agreement to upgrade SPCT. This project encompasses the extension of the existing wharf to the North by 220 metres which will enable two of the world’s largest Oasis-Class ships to berth at any one time. One Oasis-Class ship can accommodate around 6,700 guests in total.

This upgrading project will also involve the restructuring of the current terminal to increase the efficiency of passenger handling, the redevelopment of the old godowns for commercial activities and Ground Transport Area. The entire project will complete between 24 to 36 months. Once completed, SPCT will be able to accommodate 12,000 passengers as compared to 8,000 passengers currently. The location of SPCT in the city itself and in the heritage enclave were the main tourists attractions to Penang, has the potential to be the main destinations of cruise lines in Asia.
