On 16 September 2023, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries of Johor and in conjunction with International Coastal Cleanup Day, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff), a member of MMC Group, organised a beach cleanup activity at Pulau Tinggi in Mersing, Johor as part of its continuous effort in cultivating awareness on the importance of marine conservation and promoting consciousness about collaborative efforts in preserving the environment. The initiative also doubled as an opportunity to introduce and promote the use of reusable bags as a replacement for single-use plastic, which has detrimental effects on the environment, especially the marine ecosystems. The activity saw participation from Malakoff, the Department of Fisheries and those from Johor State Education Department Co-curriculum Centre.
To commemorate this ongoing initiative, an official installation of a Malakoff signboard and its officiation by Kelana bin Ali Kahar, Pulau Besar Village Head, was held at the Pulau Besar public jetty before proceeding to an educational visit to the Marine Park Information Center. In the same event, Nur Afifah binti A. Rahman, Director of the Department of Fisheries Johor graciously hosted an informative session dedicated to marine life, with a particular emphasis on their ongoing turtle conservation initiatives. Following that, Rahaman bin Ali, Pulau Tinggi Village Head guided the team to distribute Malakoff's reusable bags to further foster a culture that discourages the use of single-use plastics among the island community. All volunteers then gathered in Teluk Sebirah, Pulau Tinggi and were segregated into groups for the beach cleanup to ensure all trash and recyclables were removed properly from the site, leaving the shores spotless.
This initiative is part of Malakoff's commitment to environmental conservation where they take the lead in organising impactful Corporate Social Responsibility programmes, providing education and creating awareness of the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the environment. This is in line with the company's target of achieving a recycling rate of 15% to 20% by 2025, and with the Government's target at 40% by 2050. It also aligns with the UN Sustainability Development Goal No. 14 - Life Below Water which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
