Alam Flora Records an Increase of 3,600 Metric Tonnes

in Solid Waste Collection During Ramadan

On 2 April 2024, Malakoff's subsidiary, Alam Flora Sdn Bhd (Alam Flora), recorded an increase in solid waste collection by 3,600 metric tonnes on the 20th day of Ramadan this year compared to 2023. This figure encompasses all three areas under the waste management services of the company, namely Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Pahang.

According to Adam Saffian Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer of Alam Flora, uneaten or disrupted food sold at Ramadan bazaars is among the main contributors to the increased waste collection, aside from plastic packaging and polystyrene.

"The wastage of food during Ramadan can be seen with the rise in 2,800 metric tonnes of waste taken to the landfill daily, compared to 2,500 metric tonnes of waste on regular days, especially in densely populated areas like Kuala Lumpur," said Adam Saffian Ghazali.

According to statistics from 2019 to 2024, the trend of increased solid waste collection during Ramadan is as expected and 66% of food waste can be avoided if people know how to store and purchase food correctly.

Adam Saffian Ghazali suggests that there could be an excess of unsold food at the Ramadan bazaars, resulting in leftovers that go unconsumed, ultimately ending up in the trash bin as wasted food. Nonetheless, Alam Flora remains committed to fulfilling its responsibilities regardless of circumstances.

This is part of Malakoff's business pillar, Malakoff Environmental Solutions' aspiration to focus on environmental management and solutions that are dedicated to serving communities and the planet. It is also in line with the United Nations' Sustainability Development Goal No. 12, which ensures sustainable consumption and production patterns, and Malakoff's overarching purpose of 'Enhancing Life, Enriching Communities'.
