We asked the public not to worry since this is a simulated event, where Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (Senai International Airport) put its Airport Emergency Plan (AEP) to the test.

The scenario that took place on a drizzling morning of Thursday, 15 December 2022 involved an aircraft on final approach when it experienced a technical issue causing it to veer off the runway with high impact, then crash upon landing and engulf in a blaze where it finally comes to rest near the edge of the cargo apron. An aircraft mock-up was prepared based on the common aircraft in JHB with 120 passengers on board. The emergency call sign from the aircraft was ‘on-airport crash’.

All airports in Malaysia including Senai International Airport, are mandated by Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) to perform a full-scale emergency exercise every two years. It is also to comply with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requirements.

“Security and safety are paramount at Senai International Airport. Recently, we are the only airport in Malaysia that is being awarded a 5-star rating by the Home Ministry for its fulfilment of vital installation security measures requirements. Therefore, ensuring our airport and community emergency response teams are able to work collaboratively in the face of an emergency is critical and today, we can test our plan and abilities to respond, as a team,” said Kennedy Ayu, Chief Executive Officer of Senai International Airport.

More than 300 participated in the full-scale emergency exercise which involved the airport personnel, security, firefighting services as well as airline personnel, was an excellent opportunity to rehearse their ability to respond in an emergency.

Assisted on the scene, as they would in an actual emergency, were various agencies amongst others were Royal Malaysian Police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia, Majlis Keselamatan Negara, Chief Government Security Office, Civil Defence Department, Health Department, Kulai Hospital, Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Royal Malaysia Customs, Immigration, Meteorology Department and Senai International Airport Petronas Depot. Volunteer pilot students from Asia Aeronautical Training Academy acted as injured passengers.
