In a remarkable feat of engineering and logistics, an Mi-8T helicopter has been successfully assembled at Hangar 5, Senai International Airport. The medium-sized twin-turbine helicopter will embark on a vital mission to Indonesia, where it will play a crucial role in combating the rampant wildfires in Sumatera, Indonesia and distributing essential food supplies to those in need.

The helicopter, renowned for its capacity to carry 19 passengers and 3 tonnes of cargo, began its journey from Klaipėda Port, Lithuania, on 21 May 2024. It was transported via a flat rack container and arrived at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) on 5 July 2024. The container, laden with the helicopter and its components, was then transported by truck to Senai International Airport, arriving on 10 July 2024.

This sophisticated aircraft was assembled by a dedicated team of six engineers under the expert leadership of Captain Kaspars Ievns from Latvia. The meticulous assembly process took approximately five days and was done on a space rental basis at Hangar 5. Upon completion, the helicopter went through a series of test flights to ensure its readiness for the critical mission ahead.

Upon getting the clearance and approval from CAAM, the helicopter will depart to Sumatera and Palembang, Indonesia to support the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP). In addition to distributing food to those in need, they will also fight forest fires to prevent haze from impacting neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Singapore.

After its mission in Indonesia, the helicopter will return to Senai International Airport in November/December for dismantling. It is then scheduled to head to either South Africa or Latvia for further assignments. Notably, in the first quarter of 2025, the helicopter will return to Senai for another significant humanitarian mission, this time in Laos.

The successful assembly and deployment of the helicopter underscore the capability and strategic importance of Senai International Airport as the Southern gateway and hub for air transport logistics domestically and internationally.
