On 7 November 2023, in collaboration with the Perak Fisheries Department, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff), a member of MMC Group, organised its 7th instalment of a turtle conservation programme, 'Kenali Penyu, Sayangi Penyu', at the Turtle Conservation and Information Center Pasir Panjang (PKPPP) at Segari, Lumut, Perak. With the objectives of fostering awareness on the importance of safeguarding endangered species and actively working towards the expansion of the turtle population, the event was attended by the local communities from Kampung Segari, students from Kolej Perikanan Sultan Nazri Muizzuddin Shah, staff from the Perak Fisheries Department as well as staff Lumut Power Plant (LPP).

As part of the programme, all our volunteers took part in different activities. One group focused on planting special trees called ambong-ambong, which are crucial for helping endangered turtles. As these trees grow, they will act like a shield against bright lights and prevent land erosion.

Another team of volunteers had the special job of cleaning up the turtle ponds, working directly with these unique turtles. Being so close to them was a fantastic experience for the volunteers, and they really enjoyed learning more about these incredible creatures.

Nur Erna Liyana Adam, the Head of the Perak Conservation and Protection Branch, shared valuable information about turtles in a talk. She explained why it is crucial to take care of them. The talk ended with a fun quiz that engaged many participants.

Malakoff also played a part by giving the centre's big information board a fresh look. They added the latest information and their new logo, replacing the old one from 2012. This update reflects our ongoing commitment to caring for the environment and staying connected with our community. The event concluded with a closing address to all participants by LPP Manager Anwar Faisal Mohamed Din where he also handed over two motor pumps to the PKPPP as the Malakoff's contribution to the centre. The pump, which is relevant to the centre's operations, will be used in the daily operation of the centre.

This initiative is part of Malakoff's commitment to environmental conservation where we take the lead in organising impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes, providing education and creating awareness on the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the environment. It is in line with the UN SDG Goal No. 14 - Life Below Water which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
