On 28 October 2023, Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (Northport), a member of MMC Group, hosted a corporate screening of the movie Gemencheh Boys for 40 underprivileged students from Sekolah Kebangsaan (Asli) Sg Bumbun, Pulau Carey, Selangor.

The programme was part of Northport's corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, reaching out to its neighboring community. On this occasion, Northport took the students on a trip to Kuala Lumpur's landmarks and treated them to the inspiring movie Gemencheh Boys, based on the true story of six school kids from Gemencheh. Despite their poor backgrounds, these children defied the odds and found success in life, all thanks to their shared passion for the sport of cricket, inspired by their dedicated discipline teacher.

The occasion was made more memorable by the appearance of Shafiq Shariff, one of the six Gemencheh Boys on whom the movie was based on. Shafiq had gone on to study at Victoria Institution (VI) and represented the Malaysian cricket team, winning the SEA Games gold medal in 2017. During his speech at the end of the movie, Shafiq gave some helpful advice to the school children.

Dato' Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Northport said, "It was good to see the kids from SK Sg Bumbun being inspired by the tale of the Gemencheh boys, proving that nothing is impossible if one gives one's very best, staying focused on pursuing one's dreams and works as a team to achieve success."
