On 31 October 2024, Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (Senai International Airport) continues to expand its connectivity as Batik Air launched its new chartered flight route from Johor Bahru to Kunming, China marking a significant milestone in enhancing international travel options from the southern region of Malaysia. The inaugural flight achieved a commendable load factor of 146 passengers, a reflection on the growing interest and demand for seamless travel between the two vibrant cities.
A simple welcoming ceremony was held at Senai International Airport on 1 November 2024 to celebrate the arrival of passengers from Kunming. The event was led by Edwin Tay K Chuan, Chairman of the Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association Johor Chapter alongside Muhammad Nasir Pahmi, Director of Tourism Johor as well as representatives from Tourism Johor and Tourism Malaysia, highlighting the importance of the new route in fostering stronger ties and promoting tourism between Malaysia and China.
Kunming, also known as the City of Eternal Spring, is the capital of Yunnan Province in Southwest China. Famous for its mild climate, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Kunming serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of the Yunnan region, including the picturesque Stone Forest and the stunning Erhai Lake.
The chartered flights to Kunming will operate weekly throughout November 2024. In response to anticipated high demand, the frequency will increase to twice weekly starting in December 2024, ensuring greater convenience for travelers. The flight duration between Johor Bahru and Kunming is approximately four hours.
The new direct chartered flight from Johor Bahru to Kunming by Batik Air is set to benefit Johor. Through the incoming visitors from Kunming, it is hoped to boost tourism, foster cultural exchanges, drive economic growth and positively impact local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and attractions. This new route highlights Senai International Airport's commitment to supporting Johor's tourism and economic vision, especially in anticipation of Visit Johor 2026.
