On 23 June 2025, Penang Port Sdn Bhd (Penang Port), a member of MMC Group, announced the arrival of four new hybrid Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes from Mitsui E & S Co., Ltd. This investment of USD 7.88 million highlights Penang Port's commitment to developing an efficient and sustainable port in northern Malaysia.

The addition of these four new hybrid RTGs brings Penang Port’s total to 11 hybrid RTGs as part of its 31-unit fleet. This significant upgrade reflects the port’s commitment to innovation, having begun its hybrid RTG journey with three units in 2019 and adding four more in 2020.

The new hybrid RTGs represent a significant advancement in port operations. In addition to their effective container loading and stacking capabilities, the main innovation is their dual power source, which utilises both diesel and electric battery power. The new cranes are expected to achieve a 50% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, leading to substantial cost savings and significant environmental benefits.

Dato' Sasedharan Vasudevan, Chief Executive Officer of Penang Port stated, "This investment demonstrates our commitment to enhancing operational efficiency while fostering a greener and more sustainable port environment. The new RTGs will improve our container handling processes, streamline operations, and reduce our carbon footprint, paving the way for a healthier future."

This initiative aligns with Penang Port's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) sustainability objectives.
