On 25 May 2025, Penang Port Sdn Bhd (Penang Port), a member of MMC Group, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with Thanaleng Dry Port Sole Co. Ltd (TDP), marking a significant step forward in regional trade connectivity.

The ceremony was witnessed by YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of Lao PDR. The MoC was exchanged between Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd and Chanthone Sitthixay, Chief Executive Officer of PTL Holding Co. Ltd.

This strategic collaboration aims to establish a rail-based transport corridor connecting Lao PDR to Penang Port via Thailand, forming part of the broader Pan-Asia Railway Network. Integrated with the China-Laos Railway, it will create a powerful trade linkage from southern China through Lao PDR and Thailand to Malaysia’s West Coast.

According to Dato’ Azman, the cooperation underscores Malaysia’s growing role as a regional logistics hub and aligns with ASEAN connectivity efforts. “This initiative will not only promote multimodal integration by combining rail and sea transport but also reduce transit times and logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and boost regional economic growth. We are pleased to contribute to TDP’s efforts to realise Lao’s national strategy to transform from a land-locked country to a land-linked nation. This partnership positions Malaysia as a gateway for trade between mainland Southeast Asia and global markets,” he added.

Penang Port believes that this collaboration will significantly enhance overall movement efficiency and facilitate seamless regional trade. The port is proud to lead this forward-looking initiative to strengthen economic ties and promote sustainable regional growth—paving the way for shared prosperity and a more interconnected future.
