Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff), in collaboration with the Perak Fisheries Department, led a marine conservation campaign, ‘Save Our Sea’, on 8 September 2022 at Teluk Senangin, Lumut, Perak. Aimed at providing awareness and education to Malakoff’s stakeholders and local fishermen on the marine ecosystem and the detrimental effects of single-use plastics and overfishing to the marine wildlife, the event was officiated by YB Tuan Haji Razman Haji Zakaria, Perak State Exco for Plantation & Agriculture and Food Industry and attended by Lan Sulkaimy Md Yusof, Manager of Lumut Power Plant.
This year’s event witnessed an overwhelming participation of 350 students from various higher learning institutions in Manjung and volunteers from the surrounding community where they partook in a beach clean-up activity, followed by an environmental awareness talk by a representative from the Department of Environment and 3R programmes facilitated by Malakoff’s subsidiary, Alam Flora Environmental Solutions Sdn Bhd.
The highlight of the event was the release of unjam, which is a hard formation of natural materials such as tree branches and coconut leaves, into the sea. This formation was tied and left floating on the surface of the sea to attract fish, giving opportunities for fishermen to extricate the endangered fish species from being captured, subsequently eliminating the danger of overfishing.
This initiative is part of Malakoff’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, focusing on the Environmental pillar. Besides enhancing a close working relationship with various stakeholders and the local communities, an initiative like this is also a testament to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments and aspirations towards fostering change in accelerating the transition to a more sustainable society. This initiative is also aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 of Life Below Water, which gives focus towards conserving the ocean, seas and marine resources.
