In conjunction with the recent Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day celebrations and as a show of love and care towards the nation by keeping it clean, Alam Flora Sdn Bhd (Alam Flora), has expanded its signature 3R programme, ‘Waste is Amazing’, by organising a Merdeka themed upcycling competition.
Seen as a progressive step by the community towards creating a recycling culture in a fun and unique way, the competition received more than 100 entries from both primary and secondary schools from across the country. Gracing the grand finale, held at Fasiliti Inovasi Kitar Semula (FIKS) in Putrajaya, was Dato' TPr Fadlun Mak Ujud, President of Perbadanan Putrajaya.
According to Dato Mohd Zain Hassan, Chief Executive Officer of Alam Flora, the well-received response is an indicator for the future of sustainability in Malaysia as it is evident that the younger generation is a lot more aware on the importance of keeping a greener environment and understands how recycling can contribute to that.
The upcycling competition saw the participants pitting their skills in using recyclable materials such as plastic, paper, aluminium cans or cardboard, to come up with a design that requires the use of Jalur Gemilang colours which are red, white, blue and yellow to instil the Merdeka spirit.
Participants were tasked to submit their upcycling project videos through Alam Flora's social media platforms throughout the month of August and were carefully screened by a panel of jury following the criteria that had been set. Only 12 participants (6 from secondary schools and 6 from primary schools) were selected to enter the final round which took place at the Fasiliti Inovasi Kitar Semula (FIKS), Putrajaya.
