Johor Port Takes Root in Sustainability With Hands-On Landscape and Food Waste Composting Technique Training

Building upon a recent educational visit in February, Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a member of MMC Group, a key player in the region's Maritime trade, has further strengthened its commitment to environmental sustainability through an immersive Landscape and Food Waste Composting Technique Training session. This initiative, held at the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council's (MBPG) Nursery and Sustainability Center in Taman Mawar, served as the continuation of a valuable learning experience for Johor Port personnel.

The Training aimed to equip Johor Port staff and companies operating within the Johor Port Free Zone with practical knowledge which can be applied to daily operations. Participants were introduced to sustainable organic fertilizer and compost production methods, reinforcing efforts to promote organic material recycling and environmental sustainability.

Through this learning session, Johor Port hopes to integrate the acquired knowledge into its Green initiatives, supporting MBPG's sustainability efforts and aligning with the Government's call to strengthen Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) practices.

The hands-on training focused on the practical application of composting techniques, demonstrating how food and garden waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost. Participants gained firsthand experience on the processes involved, from the initial sorting of waste to the intricacies of Black Soldier Fly composting. The session was led by Tahir Omar, Assistant Agricultural Officer, and Siti Fatimah Abd Rahim, Assistant Environmental Health Officer, who provided a comprehensive understanding of the environmental benefits of diverting waste from landfills.

Johor Port recognizes the environmental impact of its operations and is committed to taking a proactive role in sustainability stewardship. This training session marks an important step in turning knowledge into action, as Johor Port explores ways to implement composting initiatives within its facilities to minimize its environmental footprint.
