On 15 February 2025, Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a member of MMC Group, successfully completed the first Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering in Malaysia involving the LNG dual-fuel container ship Bangkok Express, operated by Hapag-Lloyd, and the LNG bunker vessel MT Paolina Cosulich.

Bangkok Express is a 399-metre-long Hamburg-Express-class vessel with a capacity of 23,660 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). The vessel is part of a series of 12 dual-fuel container ships that are designed to run on future-ready alternatives like green methane. The ships are expected to reduce emissions by 20% to 25%, exemplifying Hapag-Lloyd's commitment to sustainable shipping.

In preparation for this LNG bunkering operation, PTP worked closely with Hapag-Lloyd, PETCO Trading Labuan Co. Ltd (PTLCL), Johor Port Authority, Malaysia Marine Department, and various government agencies to ensure not only the timeliness and efficiency of the exercise, but most importantly the safety of everyone involved and ensuring that the customer is fully satisfied.

The latest milestone underscores PTP's dedication to enhancing its competitive edge in the global market by facilitating clean and efficient maritime operations. PTP's capability in handling alternative marine fuels paves way for future trials and pilots of diverse and emerging fuel solutions, positioning the company as a leading energy transition hub. The successful collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd and PTLCL also demonstrates our commitment to innovative and sustainable energy solutions.
