Growing up in the coastal village of Banting, Selangor, the sea was a constant source of fascination for Captain Noor Adila. The vast expanse of the ocean, paired with the stories of daring maritime adventures she saw in movies and documentaries, sparked her imagination and fueled her passion. She was particularly drawn to the vital role the maritime trade plays in global commerce, understanding how it connects the world in ways few other industries could.
A JOURNEY OF EDUCATION AND DETERMINATION
While the maritime field has long been male-dominated, Captain Noor Adila saw this as an opportunity, not a limitation. She embraced the challenge of navigating a traditionally male career with courage and resolve. Despite her family’s concerns about the barriers she would face, Captain Noor Adila remained resolute in her decision to pursue her dreams.
She enrolled at Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), where she pursued a Diploma in Nautical Studies from 2011 to 2014. During her time there, she developed a solid foundation of maritime skills and knowledge, preparing herself for the demanding yet rewarding path of a marine pilot.
Upon completing her diploma, Captain Noor Adila obtained her Certificate of Competency (COC) from the Jabatan Laut, which validated her expertise in maritime navigation and operations, setting the stage for her remarkable career.
FACING THE CHALLENGES HEAD-ON
Captain Noor Adila’s entry into the maritime world in 2015 was not without its challenges. In a male-dominated industry, every day was a test of her abilities, and she had to prove herself over and over again. But with each challenge, she grew stronger and more confident.
From climbing ladders to working in confined spaces and enduring long hours, she faced the physical demands of the job head-on. Social dynamics in a male-centric profession were challenging, but Captain Noor Adila’s resilience, competence, and professionalism soon earned her the respect of her colleagues. In 2017, Captain Noor Adila faced a defining moment in her career as Officer on Watch, responsible for the safety of the vessel and its crew. When a fire alarm blared, she acted swiftly, taking control of the situation and mobilizing the crew to assess the threat. Her decisive actions, calm under pressure, and leadership ensured the safety of everyone aboard. This experience was a powerful reminder of the crucial role safety plays in the maritime industry—and of the life-saving impact good leadership can have in a crisis.
BREAKING NEW GROUND AT PENANG PORT
In September 2023, Captain Noor Adila achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female marine pilot at Penang Port. In this vital role, she
guides vessels safely through challenging waterways, maneuvering them around obstacles such as shallow waters and strong currents. Her vast expertise is indispensable in preventing accidents and ensuring smooth port operations.
Captain Noor Adila’s responsibilities include boarding incoming ships before they enter the pilotage district and guiding them to their designated berths. Her knowledge of the local waterways, combined with her exceptional skills, ensures that ships can navigate safely through potentially hazardous conditions. As a trusted marine pilot, she is an invaluable asset to Penang Port.
